Teen dies in car accident while riding to aunt's funeral

A 19-year-old man was riding in a pickup truck with his 21-year-old brother, following their father's vehicle. The whole family was heading to the funeral for the young men's aunt. They were driving on Ga. 247 in Bibb County, right around 1:30 p.m.

As they were driving, another car clipped their pickup. That car was being driven by a man from Macon, who is 20 years old.

When their truck was hit, the 21-year-old driver lost control. The truck flipped and rolled. Their father, driving ahead of them, watched the entire thing happen in his rear-view mirror, but there was nothing he could do.

The driver was injured and taken by emergency crews to Navicent Health. The younger brother, the passenger, was actually trapped in the pickup truck. Firefighters had to shut down traffic on the road for over two hours while they worked to cut him out of the vehicle.

Tragically, their efforts could not save the teen's life, and he was pronounced dead at the crash site.

Pictures from the scene show the red pickup truck flipped up on its side, the wheels in the air, with blocks of wood bracing it so that firefighters could work safely. The top of the cab is completely smashed. Emergency vehicle are parked all around it on the road -- the truck never left the pavement -- and there are also other unmarked passenger cars in the area.

A crash that takes a young person's life is tragic. Financial compensation may never give the grieving family back what they lost, but they should still know their rights to seek that compensation for funeral costs, high medical bills, lost wages and much more.
