Delivering The Help You Need

Diet helps promote healing from paralysis complications

| Jul 6, 2018 | Spinal Cord Injuries

If you suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident, it is important to focus on a healthy diet. This can help with some of the complications that often arise after such an injury.

For instance, the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation notes that one common issue people deal with is the development of pressure ulcers. These can be incredibly painful. To help with the healing process, you need to make sure your diet contains a high amount of minerals, vitamins and protein. Many common foods contain an excess of sugars and carbs, so you do need to pay attention to your intake.

Another common issue is a urinary tract infection. These can be caused in part by the over-consumption of grapefruit juice, orange juice and carbonated drinks. These drinks can make your urine alkaline, which in turn makes bacterial growth and UTIs more common.

Finally, you may deal with bladder stones or kidney stones. The foundation warns that those with spinal cord dysfunction could be more likely to have these issues. To help prevent them, it is wise to cut out coffee, soda, cocoa and beer. You may also want to avoid cheese, milk, ice cream and yogurt. Above all else, you want to increase your intake of water to make sure you are always well hydrated. Many people suffer from constant dehydration without even realizing it.

These are just some of the life changes you may need to make after serious spinal cord injuries. As you move forward with your life, make sure you understand all of your legal rights to compensation.
