Interstate 20 truck crash kills University of Georgia student

The driver of a tractor-trailer was arrested following an Atlanta-area crash earlier this month that killed a 20-year-old Carrollton man. The crash occurred on the evening of Jan. 17 on Interstate 20 not far from Fulton Industrial Blvd.

According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), the 53-year-old tractor-trailer driver was traveling eastbound when his truck overturned and struck a concrete barrier separating the westbound and eastbound lanes of the interstate. Debris from that barrier struck two other vehicles.

The young man who died was driving one of those vehicles. The University of Georgia sophomore was pronounced dead at the crash scene. Three other people suffered injuries, but their conditions were not made public.

The tractor-trailer driver was charged with second-degree homicide by vehicle, following too closely and improper lane change. He is being held in Fulton County Jail. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has also placed a hold on him. It wasn't reported what country the man is from -- only that he lives in Hialeah, Florida. It's not known yet what caused the tractor-trailer to overturn.

Most lanes of the I-20 in both directions were closed overnight as workers cleaned up the debris from the fiery crash. The concrete barrier still needs to be repaired.

Large commercial vehicles like tractor-trailers and semitrucks can cause significant injuries and damage over a vast swath of road when they crash or overturn. If you or a loved one has been the victim of a truck crash, you're likely facing high medical bills and a lengthy recuperation period. Of course, if you've lost a loved one in a truck crash, your life will never be the same.

While no amount of money can undo the damage, it's essential to find out what individuals and entities can and should be held legally and financially responsible. An experienced attorney can help you seek justice.
