Motorcycle accident deaths increased from 2014 to 2015

Motorcycle accidents have always been a problem, and they have also always been an inherently dangerous event for the motorcyclist. There is no real way to improve the safety of motorcycles. They are open vehicles with few safety features, if any at all. Motorcyclists must rely on their own gear — a helmet, padded clothing, etc. — to protect themselves. In other words, motorcyclists rely quite a bit on other vehicle being safe when they are out on the road. Drivers that fail to look out for motorcyclists could be held liable in an accident.

On that note, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has some data about the increasing number of fatalities in motorcycle accidents. In 2015, 4,976 people died in these accidents. That’s an increase of 8.3 percent compared to the number of fatalities in 2014 (4,594). In addition, fatality rates in motorcycle accidents has remained remarkably stable since 2006, when 4,837 people died in motorcycle crashes.

So what does this all mean? Well, for one, it means that all motorcyclists should take every precaution they can out on the road. Helmet use has never eclipsed 71 percent, which means more can be done in this area.

But the other takeaway from this data is that when a motorcycle accident does occur, fatal results are common. For the loved ones of the motorcyclist, a wrongful death lawsuit may be in order if the at-fault driver is deemed to be negligent in the crash.
