How is a whiplash injury categorized?

Whiplash is a type of injury to the neck that is caused by a sudden forward or backward movement of the head that’s often experienced in car accidents.

Grade 0 Whiplash

In this grade, you don’t have any symptoms whether it’s neck pain, headaches, dizziness or blurred vision.

Grade I Whiplash

Here, you have neck pain and stiffness that is not likely to last for more than a day. Most patients don’t even present any physical signs of injury.

Grade II Whiplash

Grade 2 whiplash usually presents musculoskeletal signs, such as neck pain, tenderness, and limited range of motion. You might also have headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.

Grade III Whiplash

At this level, you have neurologic signs, such as arm or leg weakness, numbness or tingling in the extremities, loss of balance or coordination, and blurred vision. You may also have neck problems, chest pain, and abdominal problems.

Grade IV Whiplash

At this stage, you have significant neurologic signs and symptoms as well as severe neck pain. You might also have fractures or dislocation of the vertebrae if you experienced a catastrophic injury.

What should you do if you experience whiplash?

If you have any of the symptoms listed above, seek medical attention immediately. Even if your symptoms seem mild, it’s important to get checked out by a doctor. Treatment for whiplash usually involves a combination of rest, ice, and physical therapy. Depending on the severity of your injury, you may also need surgery.
